Dexter Gordon , Beware this man !
Aha ! Dexter Gordon ! Not far than yesterday, I puted a CD of him for a reason I ignore, or so I pretend…
He whispered just in the right ear, the right sound : “I’m a fool to want you” ! Could you listen that and still remain cold ? Not me.
Dexter Gordon, an american jazzman, was born in 1923 at Los Angeles, joined the legendary Lionel Hampton’s orchestra and stayed there three years, where he learned a simple and a fluid play, just like others –inspired by Lester Young, did.
In 1944 he went to New York, where be-bop jazz was at its débuts and played there with giants like Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie.
He launched the “Duel duos” fashion and explored many areas, more and more smouthy, and yet never aggressive play.
Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane the great tenor saxophonists, confess that Dexter Gordon inspired them, by his simple and yet studious melody search, his coherent and non aggressive play.
Dexter left us in 1990. Goodbye man ! You know, you make me cry…
